From Alfred Ross:
"I rather think that the original purposes diverge significantly in that the US revolution and decision to move from a loose confederacy to a full political union was a progressive, anti-colonial impulse (recognizing important internal contradictions including slavery, to absence of voting for women and persons of less wealth, among others) whereas the only purpose behind the new German/French initiative is to consolidate banker control over the democratic states of Europe for the purpose of crushing the standard of living of the populations in the interest of international finance capital – including the US financial interests.

While more than 200 years ago progressive forces welcomed the new American revolution as a break from monarchic colonialism and welcomed the formal articulation of the Bill of Rights, the new Geitner-Merkel-Sarkozy regime for the future of Europe is a major threat to the democratic hopes of the people of Europe and peace in our world. The class basis of the American Revolution and the triumph of the Hamiltonian banking faction evolved (or devolved) into the US imperialist nightmare that led to the US interventions in Vietnam, Indonesia, Guatemala, Iran, etc. and it is precisely that retrograde tendency which is the driving force behind the new vision for Europe."

The Netherlands is fast spiralling down to a low I in my young life have never experienced and that sucks... kudo's on the blog in general btw... I's good to see some english language dutch news, I have a lot of english speaking online friends and this will be an invaluable tool in explqaining what is going on in our little country by the north sea

Nice piece. I especially like the fact that you didn't ignore the use of referenda in Switzerland and that Wilders also asked for one. But what also counts is the economic direction Wilders is heading to. During the last elections he 'fought' for the AOW age to stay 65 (although he dropped this as the first topic during the talks with the VVD and CDA). The battle for 65 indicated though that Wilders is leaving his right-wing roots to attract more voters: conservative left-wing in economics, but conservative right-wing in immigration. And last but not least: The populist parties in Denmark and Switzerland were in the government during the last years and then they turned out not to be able to fulfill all the expectations they created. Possible Wilders-scenario?

If shale gas is the not the ideal option, what does trigger the governments and multinationals then to prepare for eventual switching to shale gas? Wind, water and sun energy (and maybe even nuclear?) will be cleaner and less dangerous. Is it the cheapest option, or is it 'just' the option that requires the least changes in the energy system?
